US National Institutes of Health is Hiring a Health Technician (Phlebotomy) Near Montgomery, MD

Duties

As a GS-0640-07 Health Technician (Phlebotomy) your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Functions as a health technician (phlebotomist), in an active clinic. Bloods are drawn for both clinical testing and for research protocols. The incumbent collaborates with doctors, head nurses, and other nursing staff on a daily basis. Communication is necessary to clarify requests for blood draws, accept verbal orders on a STAT basis; explain laboratory procedures and policies, or to resolve problems with requests or specimens.
  • Draws blood specimen from inpatients on all nursing units after observing dietary requirements such as fasting. Obtains blood cultures and collects blood specimen according to requirements, based on the tests ordered by physician, without overdrawing. Observes strict "Universal Precautions" during all patient contact, due to the large number of bloods drawn with blood-borne pathogens.
  • Processes specimens by centrifuging, separating, measuring volume, and aliquoting according to test requirements and individual service requirements.
  • Compares specimen received, to a variety of conditions that must be met such as, correct labeling, amount of specimen received for number and type of tests ordered; and places orders into MIS for physicians requesting certain tests which cannot be ordered by the physician because prior approval must be obtained from senior staff in the Department before specimens can be sent to laboratory.
  • Performs complex accession routines to match tests requested, to number and type of specimen tubes received, in order to properly account for all orders on the patient. Identifies problems regarding specimens or orders to patient care providers, e.g. specimens that arrive unlabeled, mislabeled, insufficient quantity for tests requested, or collected in wrong tube; and contacts the nursing units or physician directly for specimen that are rejected in order to direct the patient care physician to recollect the specimen as needed.
